Level float for opto-mechanical level measurement

Some industrial processes do not allow the use of floats inside the containers due to extreme heat, pressure or explosive media. Instead, the media level is indicated by glass tubes outside the tanks. However, this will not work when very high pressures are used, as the glass tube may break.

Here, floats incorporating strong magnets are used inside the tank, where they float on the surface of the medium. Outside, metal flaps or "blinds" interact with the magnetism, thus indicating the position of the float. Hence, the substance level can be monitored in a pure mechanical way.
